Strawberry & Fromage Frais Crepes
English strawberries are in season! I made strawberry compote to fill homemade crapes. I also wanted to add something creamy in crepes. Whipped cream would be my first choice, but I didn't have any. Instead, I had Fromage Frais. As the name means "fresh cheese" in French, it's a fresh, low-fat curd cheese made from pasteurized cow's milk. The taste and texture are similar to yogurt. Fromage Frais was new for me. I happened to know it from an article or something I read recently and I bought one from Waitrose to amuse my curiosity. In fact I haven't seen Fromage Frais in the US. While I hadn't particularly looked for it, I believe at least a local grocery that I shopped almost everyday didn't offer such a fancy cheese. I know J doesn't snack yogurt but he loves cheese. Hoping he would like the combination of sweet strawberry compote and fresh cheese, I served crepes filled with both. Well, he clearly didn't like it. It was too sour or tart for him. Probably I should have added some sugar, honey or sweetener in Fromage Frais although I thought the freshness was the key to enjoy, which didn't work on J. My homemade strawberry compote wasn't overly sweet, which didn't sweeten Fromage Frais. I'm sorry, J! On the other hand I liked my creation. I thought the crepes were very refreshing.
