Lunch @ Settle after Sulber Nick Walk

It was about a month ago when we took a circular walk through Sulber Nick, a major fault on Ingleborough’s lower eastern slopes. It was raining a day before but the weather cleared up by the morning. The starting point was National Park car park in Horton in Ribblesdale. We passed across the railway and stepped into an open pasture!

Although the glass field looked beautiful, the footpath was actually wet and muddy. We didn't prepare for a big adventure in the nature well. My shoes got wet immediately. I believe J's too. It was pretty much uncomfortable but the beautiful views surrounding me and the bright sunshine kept me moving forward.

Looking back the way we took, we came to a much higher level and couldn't see a green pasture that was at the beginning of our walk (where I whimpered) anymore! Pen-y-ghent, one of Yorkshire three peaks looked far away. At that point we hadn't reached a half way point, though. Chilly winds kept blowing into our faces. It was time for a tea break. We bought a thermos flask recently. This was the first time that we used it! I filled the flask with hot tea at home and placed it in my backpack. We shared a little cuppa. Tea was still very hot and made us warm and happy.

We walked toward the peak of Ingleborough, another Yorkshire three peaks, following yellow-color signs. I expected that we would reach a wide area of limestone pavement at some point, but somehow we didn't. There were many limestone rocks on our way but not like a neat pavement like the top of Malham Cove. That's fine because we met lovely creatures on our latter half way instead.

It was about three hour walk. Good for us! When we came back to the car park, it was time for lunch. We stopped by at Settle, a market town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We found a coffee house situated in the 17th century building called the Folly. The Folly was once a house of a rich lawyer and now the coffee house as well as the Museum of North Craven Life.

The Folly had a garden at the back of the building where we enjoyed our take-out lunch. I had a zucchini and Wensleydale cheese quiche. The quiche was good. J had some kind of sandwich and soup combo.

We had desserts too! J had orange chocolate cake. I don't know how it was. Mine was something with pink cream..,, maybe a raspberry white chocolate cake? It was a little too sweet for me.

We also took a couple of piece of Folly Scallywags home. According to the Folly, "A Scallywag is a cross between a fruited scone and a rock bun rather like a Yorkshire Rascal. Our Scallywags are flavoured with just the right amount of cinnamon and nutmeg mixed with sour cream, topped with a cherry and baked until golden brown." Scallywags were new to us. They were just as the Folly described. I liked the hint of warm spices in them.

What a wonderful day out!
