Australian Fruit Jam Tasting

J's friend who lives in Australia kindly sent us three kinds of jams made from Australian native fruits that I have never heard of! Davidson Plum is a rainforest plant. It has a plum-shape and a dark purple color, but I don’t know if it actually belongs to a family of plum. It's supposed to be very tart. The jam (48% fruit) was sweetened with cane sugar but very tart. I would say wonderfully tart because I love a tart fruit jam.

Finger Lime is another bush plant growing in Aussie rainforests. It's a finger-sized and finger-shaped fruit and also a kind of citrus. The jar of Finger Lime Marmalade contained Finger Limes Citrus australasica (24%), Fresh Lime juice, Cane Sugar, Fresh Lemon Juice, Lemon Myrtle, Citrus Pectin. It definitely had a taste of lime. Did it come from the finger limes or fresh lime juice, i wonder… It was a nice alternative to the usual bitter orange marmalade.

Desert Quandong is a small red fruit found throughout the arid and semi-arid areas of southern Australia extending into the centre of the continent. Its taste is described as slightly sour and salty as well as subtle, earthy, sweet peachy and citrusy. The Jam was made from Quandong fruit (38%), cane sugar, ginger (11%), blue mountains spring water, citrus pectin. The ginger flavor was very strong, which made it hard to identify Desert Quandong in the jar. Meanwhile, the jam tasted good.

In my opinion Rainforest Plum Jam was a winner. J's favorite was Finger Lime Marmalade, maybe? It was our pleasure to meet mysterious Aussie fruits.
