Lisbon, Portugal Day 6
Day 6 was the day we were leaving Lisbon. We had some time in the morning before heading to the airport. We took a short walk in the city center for breakfast. It looked like another lovely day.
We revisited Confeitaria Nacional. Good morning, the beautiful pastries!
One of the counters was dedicated to Bolo Rei, or King Cake, the traditional Portuguese Christmas Cake!
Like the last time we were seated on the upstarts dining room. There was a showcase that displayed selected items from the downstairs.
What should I have for my last breakfast in Lisbon? Confeitaria Nacional's version of Bolo de Arroz (a Portuguese Rice Muffin)? or my 9th Pastel de Nata? While I was examining the items in the showcase, I was thinking that we would miss our lunch and possibly dinner of the day since our traveling would kill the entire afternoon...
Suddenly I felt obligated to eat wise and healthy. I found myself ordering scrambled eggs on toast.
J had Eggs Benedict, by the way.
When I finished my egg and toast up, I felt incomplete and remembered the adorable orange-colored mice. Although I didn't know what those mice were made with, I asked for one of the mystery mice when our waitress came to our table. My mouse was so cute! It was a small layered cake. Light sponge cake on the bottom, whipped cream (butter cream?) in the middle, and Doce de Ovos, a Portuguese sweet egg cream, made with egg yolks and sugar syrup, on the top. It was pretty sweet. The small mouse size was just adequate.
Then we walked through the Restauradores Square. We must have seen the Monument to the Restorers everyday during our stay. The obelisk was erected there in 1886, commemorating the restoration of Portuguese Independence from Spain in 1640.
The trip was entertaining! I liked the warm winter weather, the food and the hilly walks. Pasteis de Nata tasting was fun! I think eight egg tarts were a good amount to get to know the country's iconic pastry. First of all it was great seeing our friend there. I hope to see her again in Lisbon or somewhere. Until then, take care!
