Grassington, now known as Darrowby

It was a beautiful Spring Sunday. We put on hiking shoes and headed to Yorkshire Dales! Our walk started at Grassington. It was the first time for us to visit the historic market village. I wanted to see the village because it was one of main filming locations for All Creatures Great and Small, a TV show that we have watched last year. In the show, the house below at the main square was Skeldale House (where Herriot lives and works) in a fictional village of Darrowby.

Those buildings were also familiar from the show!

At one step outside of the village, we were in beautiful rolling hills of Wharfedale.

We crossed some green pastures and run into cows talking a morning walk. Moo!

Our path continued to Grass Wood, one of the largest areas of broadleaved woodland in the Dales. It was a nice change from open pasture scenery.

Grass Wood was actually hilly. There was an ancient monument of Fort Gregory, the Iron-Age (A.D. 70) fort on a hilltop. What a surprise!

Our path reached River Wharfe. We walked along with the water towards the village of Grassington. The  banks were beautiful. It would be perfect for a picnic!

We came back to the village and it was time for lunch!

We tried Retreat Tearoom & Bistro. Luckily we were seated at a window table!

We both started with a big glass of Coco-Loco - mango, pineapple, coconut and mint smoothie. Very refreshing. It was just what we needed after a long walk under the sun.

Also we chose the same dish - toasted falafel and spinach wrap with salad and chips. Well, almost the same. Mine skipped chili jam. We had a cozy and nice lunch time there. We took lemon (?) cake and raspberry blondie (?) with us for tea time at home later.

The village has got busy by the afternoon. We stopped by at another cafe and picked up two fruit scones and apricot slice.

We checked another shop and J wanted to go home at that point. However I kept talking about stepping stones across the river. He kindly walked there with me and watched me happily stepping on the stones. It added extra 0.8 mile down and up hill walk to the total hiking distance of the day. Yay!

I also had a chance to see baby sheep on the way. It was a wonderful day-out. Thank you J! I wish we have more time to explore the Dales.
