Helo Wales! 10: Portmeirion - The Village
It took only about 10 minutes from Porthmadog to Portmeirion, our final destination of this Wales trip! Portmeirion is an Italianate style village on the coast of North Wales that was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1976. He was a British architect and environmentalist who became knighted for his "services to architecture and the environment." It's now a tourist village that amuses visitors with colorful fairytale architecture that Clough successfully created by following his dream.
By the way, the cylindrical house was No. 6's house. Some people might understand what I am talking about.
In the village, there were several cafes as well as gift shops. We had a tea time at one of the cafes near No.6's house. Our treats were Welsh cakes. They were like small pancakes with dried fruits (raisins and/or currants), slightly spiced with at least cinnamon. Their texture was kinda dry. I don't know they were supposed to be like that or were just a bit old. I have seen Welsh cakes at both M&S and Waitrose in Harrogate. I would like to buy some to know Welsh cakes more. During the tea time, J made a friend with whom he shared his Welsh cake.
Walking around the Italianate fantasy village made me forget that we were still in Wales. The place was enchanted!
