Mackerel & Scharfe Maxx on Bagels, and New Fruits

These were smoked wild mackerel fillet and Scharfe Maxx Swiss cheese on bagels.

We usually buy smoked salmon, so tried something different. I liked the change. Also a casual meeting with Scharfe Maxx was valuable. We happened to know the cheese and appreciated the pleasant taste.

Strong fish + Strong cheese = Pungent bagels.

We enjoyed it very much and were satisfied after just ate one piece. So we both saved the other for the next day. The toasted fish/cheese air lay all around in the house all the day...

Along with the bagels, we enjoyed fruits too. This time we picked a few unusual fruits: Starfruit and Persimmon. Maybe Starfruit wasn't fully ripen yet?

Persimmon was very sweet but "Shibui" in Japanese. I couldn't find a right English word to describe, but the persimmon made my mouth funny or numb. That sometimes happens when I eat persimmon, even mango or banana. It seems that Tannin in fruits does the trick. Persimmon is very common in Japan, and I ate many persimmons every fall. According to a Japanese web dictionary about fruits, persimmon is naturally Shibui, so Japanese farmers artificially improve persimmons to stop Tannin melting out from persimmons so that you will only taste sweetness. Interesting. Maybe this persimmon didn't get such a special treatment.

Anyway it was fun to try!
