Huffkins' Cranberry & Orange Liqueur Fruitcake
Fruitcake has been playing an important part of our Christmas experience since we moved in England. While we usually buy one or two at a local Bettys shop, we tried one for the latest Christmas from a shop of Huffkins bakery in Stow-on-the-Wold. Huffkins was established in 1890 in the Cotswolds town of Burford. The family-run business now operates some shops and cafes in/around Cotswolds and a few in/around London. I was interested in their baked goods since their name kept popping up when I was searching good bakeries in Cotswolds. I was happy when I found them in Stow-on-the-Wold!
I didn't see much fresh baked goods like scones or pasties around the counter, but several fruitcake loafs, well-wrapped and suitable for travel, were waiting to be picked up. Hello, fruitcake! We took one home with us. It was pretty dense and heavy, which a decent fruitcake should be. The cake part was lovely - a good ratio of fruit to cake, lightly spiced, moist and not too sweet. The generous topping of nuts and candied cherries added a nice bite. Honestly I didn't notice orange liqueur but it must have melt in beautifully.
J seemed to like the cake, too. What kind of fruitcake shall we have next? We'll see!
