Damson Extra Jam by Hawkshead Relish Company

This was the damson jam that I mentioned some days ago! The variety of damson grown in the Lake District, especially in and around the Lyth and Winster valleys, south-west of Kendal, is called Westmorland damson. Westmorland is a historic county and now a part of the county of Cumbria. While damsons are grown in other areas in UK, it is said that the flavor of Westmorland damson, which is relatively smaller, is said to be incomparable. The origin of damson was around Damascus, the capital of Syria as its name implies; Crusaders or Romans seem to have brought the fruit to England. Damsons have been grown in Westmorland at least since the 18th century. Damson can grow the cool and wet climate, which the Lake District is well known for.

Anyway, Hawkshead Relish Company's Damson Extra Jam tasted bright with a fine balance between sweet and tart. Superb! I, a jam eater, loved it. I couldn't find a smaller jar of the jam at the store, so had to buy a larger one. Ah, I should have bought two (or three) of them!
