The Lakes Day 1 - Lancaster & Sizergh Castle

We started traveling again! Our latest destination was the Lake District. It was our first time to visit the area. On our way to the Lakes, we made a detour to Lancaster, one of England's historic cities to have a breakfast and explore the downtown.

Journey Social was a lovely cafe that J picked up for breakfast. We arrived there about 30 minutes before the cafe opens. We killed time by walking around the town and came back to the cafe about 5 minutes before the opening. Surprisingly there were a long waiting line in front of the cafe! Luckily we were still in the first seating group.

While the serving was a bit slow because of the crowds in the cafe, we weren't in a rush. I had a cup of green tea and J had filter coffee, relaxing and looking forward to our breakfast meals.

My french toast was so fluffy! It was pretty simple but tasty. I could eat another block.

J had eggs and steaks, I think. He was happy with the savory dish, I believe.

Their baked goods looked great. We took a blueberry almond muffin and a slice of lemon apricot polenta cake with us for later.

The main attraction of Lancaster was probably Lancaster Castle, a medieval castle once upon a time and a prison until recently.  The castle courtyards was open to the public for free. There wasn't much to see but there was an information board that tells you which building was built when for what.

We also visited the Roman bath house but the ruins were so small and not impressive. After a little more walk in the town, we headed to the next stop - Sizergh Castle, which is located at the gateway to the Lake District.

First we walked up a hill, a part of the Sizergh estate and enjoyed the open wide view and watching cows. Then, we explored the gardens. Our favorite was Rock Garden!

Sizergh castle has been the home of the Strickland family over 700 years. The oldest part of the house is the four story tower built in the 14th century. The wood-paneled walls were impressive. Sometime they looked like chocolate bars. Dark chocolate bars, more precisely.

Finally, we drove to Ambleside, a town in the Lakes where we stayed. We took away a vegetable pizza from an Italian restaurant that our cottage owner recommended and had a pizza dinner at the cottage.

It was a nice start of our vacation! To be continued...
