Yorkshire Coast - Scarborough & then Malton
I wished to stay in Robin Hood's Bay longer although it was time to drive to Scarborough. Our main attraction there was Scarborough Castle, a former medieval Royal fortress developed by Henry II and his successors. Before that, the Romans built a signal station on the site, and much before that, there was an Iron Age settlement. Now, the place seemed to appreciate its peaceful retirement life.
By overlooking the town and beaches of Scarborough from the castle, I realized that Scarborough was much bigger city than Whitby!
We walked in the town of Scarborough a bit. The town was busy with lots of shops and lots of people. I totally missed the cute little quiet village of Robin Hood's Bay. We left Scarborough quickly and visited Malton on our way home. Malton is a market town, reinvented as "Yorkshire's Food Capital."
Apparently the town was becoming a ghost town about 10 years ago because the young people had moved out to cities such as York and the shops were deserted. Tom Naylor-Leyland who is heir to the £176m Fitzwilliam estates, including the town of Malton, has been helping the town being reborn as the foodie capital of Yorkshire. According to The Financial Times, food is a particular passion of his.
Luckily it was the day of the town's monthly food market. We did some shopping. It will be another story. Among Malton-based restaurants, we chose La Pizzeria for lunch. They offer Neapolitan style pizza, baked in a traditional wood fired pizza oven. How could J resist it?
J's pizza was Finocchiona - fennel salami, smoked mozzarella, slow roast leeks and gorgonzola. I sampled a few slices of his. Mine was simple Margherita. Both were nice and very cheesy!
Time to go back to Harrogate. Our sweet home!
