Yorkshire Coast - Whitby 2
Magpie Café's famous fish and chips for J! The seafood restaurant, established in 1937, has been an icon of Whitby, known for the fish and chips as well as a long waiting line (I should say "queues" in English) in front of the place. Yes, we waited for a table for a while patiently. The menu was extensive but it didn't change J's original reason to come to the restaurant: fish and chips. His fish was cod. The dish came with a mount of fried potato. He seemed to enjoy his choice very much.
On the other hand, I wasn't in mood of fried foods. I decided to have a small poached lemon sole with lemon and chive butter sauce and fresh salad for side. The fish was lovely. The salad was pretty good, too. I was happy with my orders.
Before and after the lunch, we explored the town. It was kinda small but hilly. Walking up and down on the steep streets was good for us! Whitby is called the “Goth” capital of England due to its Bram Stoker's Dracula connections. We saw some people dressed as Goths on the streets, but the town wasn't spooky. Street vendors selling candies and ice creams, local shops with a sign of fish and chips, pastel-colored B&B houses, amusement parks for kids, etc, ... Whitby was just a family-friendly seaside resort in a bit slow pace in the mid April.
To be continued...
