Bettys Chocolate Cakes: Grand Cru Chocolate Cake vs Swiss Chocolate Torte

Chocolate cake is tricky. Many have disappointed me because they were oily and/or dry, and in most cases, not really chocolate-y. How about those from our favorite bakery, Bettys? Bettys Grand Cru Chocolate Cake surprised me in a good way. It was one of their regular loaf cakes. Like their lemon and lime cake and Yorkshire Tea loaf, I guessed it would be just another light moist pound cake. On the contrary, Grand Cru Chocolate Cake was very dense and super chocolate-y. The dark chocolate ganache layer on the top was luxurious and brought the cake to the chocolate-heaven. The term "Gran Cru" was appropriate.

Berrys also provides Swiss Chocolate Torte - A Swiss dark chocolate cake made with almonds and ground hazelnuts. We had one before the last Christmas. It was ok but kinda dry and off flavor. Maybe the piece we got was somewhat stale. Unfortunately the cake wasn't memorable even though it was one of the cakes that Bettys highlights as "Swiss Specialities."
