Juliette's Gingerbread from Bruges
Another non-chocolate treat from Belgium was gingerbread. We stopped by at Juliette, a bakery on a busy street, Wollestraat in Bruges. They sold various kinds of handmade cookies, which looked nice, but what caught my eye was a cute heart-shaped cake. J asked a lady in the shop what it was; the answer was gingerbread.
In addition to the heart-shaped one that was plain gingerbread with peal sugar on top, a couple of different flavor choices were available. We picked one with apricots and almonds. Although it was in a simple block shape, the flavor sounded lovely.
The gingerbread was sweet, chewy, bouncy, a bit dry, and slightly bitter, perhaps from which ginger and honey came. It was just like the Dutch spice cake, Kruidkoekrepen that we got from our dear Dutch friend. I also remember that we had a French "57% honey" ginger bread, which was a similar to this. Perhaps, all were basically the same...
