Original Mozartkugel
One of souvenirs from Salzburg was "original" Mozartkugel, a small round confection made with pistachio marzipan and nougat that is covered with dark chocolate. While Mozartkugel is apparently made by some different companies and sold everywhere in the city, the original Mozarkugel was made by Paul Fürst, a Salzburg confectioner in 1890. Unlike other competitors, it is said that Cafe Konditorei Fürst (Fürst's confectionery shop opened in 1884) still hand-make Mozartkugel in a traditional way. So, we made sure to buy the original balls at the cafe.
Fürst's Mozartkugel tasted fresh and pretty good although I can't compare them with other Mozartkugel because I haven't had others.
By the way, according to the Cafe's website, Fürst "chose the name Mozartkugel to pay his respects to Salzburg’s own Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who at the time was actually not very popular". The success of Mozartkugel might have contributed improving Mozart's popularity by spreading thousands of Mozart's face printed on each little ball around the world, perhaps?
