Vienna, Austria 10: Café Landtmann for Kaiserschmarrn
We revisited Café Landtmann in the late afternoon to have a traditional Austrian dessert, Kaiserschmarrn. It's chopped sweet pancake that "takes its name from the Austrian emperor (Kaiser) Franz Joseph I, who was very fond of this kind of fluffy shredded pancake," according to wiki. Café Landtmann was mentioned online as one of the best places to have Kaiserschmarrn.
Their version of the Kaiser's favorite pancake was made with raisins, served in a pan, and came along with apple puree and plum compote. The pancake reminded me of bread pudding. It was kinda fluffy, a bit chewy, not airy. Both plum compote and apple puree were great while I preferred plum compote for the pancake. The pancake was enjoyable. I would love to make one by myself. I am sure there must be recipes available online. Finding plum compote could be difficult, though. Well, I will think about it later.
J had a couple of bites of the pancake and enjoyed his Turkish coffee. Unlike the last time, which was in the early morning, the cafe was totally packed with people and very busy. I felt as if we were at a different cafe from one that we had a quiet and luxury breakfast time some days ago. The service was surprisingly quick even though the dining room was awfully crowded. I guess servers who work for a famous coffeehouse in Vienna are used to handle such a condition. We left the cafe, watching a long waiting line around the entrance and beautiful cakes in the showcase.
Between the lunch and the pancake, we walked a lot in the city, especially around the upper north-west of Innere Stadt, admiring the beauty of church architecture that we happened to find on our way.
