Salzburg, Austria 3: Istra Kobona Restaurant
I had my first Croatian cuisine in Salzburg and it was great! J found Istra Kobona Restaurant, an Croatian restaurant specializes in fish, located in the New Town of Salzburg and we visited there for a late lunch. They didn't have an English-written menu and our server didn't speak English very much. Actually they didn't have a menu, at least for lunch. Our server simply asked us fish or ham (I think) and we chose fish. I had no idea what were going to be served. Well, we knew that it would be a kind of fish. The result was a beautifully grilled whole fish with grilled mix vegetables. The dish was cooked with olive oil, seasoned with a plenty of garlic as well as lightly salt/pepper, garnished with fresh parsley. Very simple and very tasty.
It was a quite busy day. We went up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, the biggest fully preserved castle in Central Europe, sitting atop a hill and overlooking the entire city.
There must have been beautiful snow-topped mountains behind the clouds. We could see a tiny bit of them for a second!
Then we took a bus to Schloss Hellbrunn (Hellbrunn Palace) an early Baroque villa of palatial size built in the early 17th century by Markus Sittikus von Hohenems, Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. We jointed the guided tour of Trick Fountains at the palace. Since the tricks should be a secret, I won't say or show the details while the tour could be the most interesting and beautiful place for me during the trip. Also, climbing up to the Folklore Museum on the hill in the palace property must have been the hardest exercise during the trip. It was worth doing it, though. The view from the museum was spectacular and the peaceful nature path to the museum through the forest was a great escape from the busy-tourist-city-center of Salzburg.
